MODEL OF BILINGUAL ( SERBIAN - ENGLISH ) TEACHING IN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Slavica Sevkusic, Ljubomir Stojanovic

A project of bilingual, Serbian - English teaching in the junior section of primary school is the experimental application of a new model of primary education. Its 1st phase is realized in the first grade of primary school "Maksim Gorki" in Belgrade as an experimental lass on the incentive of Belgrade School of Foreign Languages "Galindo". The main characteristic of this model is the introduction of English in instruction and its intensive learning to the principle of bilingualism applied in treatment of curricular contents. The basic premise of this model regarding principles, aims and contents of educational work with children as well as organization of space and time differs greatly from the assumptions on which the work in the existent primary school is based. Two subjects are particularly innovative: 1) "Something Personal" aiming to encourage systematically the development of children's self-esteem, obtaining knowledges about themselves and the others, gaining consciousness about their own feelings and needs and development of their capability to co-operate and work in group; 2) work on computer where children are taught to use specific programming languages at the basic level.
