BIOGRAPHY
Branko Đaković was born in 1950 in Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He received his Bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1974 and in ethnology in 1977 from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. In 1983 he defended his Master’s thesis in ethnology entitled Artefacts put in the grave in the territory of Yugoslavia. He received a Ph.D. in ethnology in 1994 with a thesis: Traditional forms of cooperation between farmers in working with farm animals. From 1978 to 1987 he worked as a curator and a senior curator at the Zagreb Ethnographic Museum and in 1988 he began working as an assistant at the Department of Ethnology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. In 1997 he was promoted to senior assistant and in 1999 he became an assistant professor. In 2004 he was promoted to an associate professor and was tenured as a full professor in 2011.
He has been lecturing at the Department of Ethnology since 1987 (teaching the following courses: Principles of Ethnographic Research, Rural Architecture and Housing, Custom Law Norms, Social and Spiritual Culture of South Slavs, Topics from Traditional Farms, Ethnological Cartography, Ethnography of Southeast Europe). He has cooperated with the Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture as well as regional Conservation Institutes. Also, he has had good cooperation with Ethnographic Museums in Zagreb, Split and Pazin as well as with numerous higher education institutions (the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, University of Zadar; Zagreb Ethnology and Folklore Research Institute; Ethnology Department of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts; Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Department of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana; Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Department of Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy; Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Institute of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje; Marko Cepenkov Folkloristics Institute, Skopje; Department of Celtic and Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh; Department of Ethnography, University of Debrecen; Department of Ethnology, University of Szeged; Katedra etnologie a etnomuzikologie, Univerzita Konstantina Filozofa, Nitra).
From 1990 to 1999 he was appointed deputy head of the Department of Ethnology, and from 1999 to 2004 he was the head of the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology. Since 2000 he has been the head of the Chair for Ethnological Methods and Cartography. From 1988 to 1992 he was a member of the editorial board of a scientific journal Etnološka tribina. He is a member of the following associations: Croatian Ethnological Society (vice-president from 1987-1989), Society of University Teachers, Scholars and other Scientists, Croatian Geographical Society, ICAM (International confederation of Architectural Museums) and ECOVAST (European council for the Village and Small Town). He was the head of international cooperation of students in Motovun (1999-2004), the head of Ethnology Summer School at Rab (2001-2003). In 2001 he initiated the setting up of the Ethnology Students Club “Household Elves”. He was a member as well as chair of many master’s and doctoral thesis committees. He is a reviewer of numerous professional and scientific publications. He participated in many scientific projects: Thematic Ethnological Research (1988-1990, leader), Destroyed Traditional Culture of Western Slavonia (1997-2002, collaborator), Ethnological Database as the Source of Knowledge about Ethnological and Culturological Identities (2007-2012, head), Information System of Vernacular Stone Architecture on the Adriatic: Eastern Sea Shore of the Adriatic from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia to Montenegro – system, documents, scientific elaboration, education, motivation (2007-2011, collaborator).
The scientific interests of Professor Branko Đaković include ethnological cartography, rural architecture and housing, traditional economy, customs (life and annual cycles).
