International cooperation

International cooperation

The Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology has developed an intensive international cooperation in higher education. It is realized in different forms: as mobility of teachers, and undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students; as joint research projects; as fieldwork, summers schools and conferences visited by guest foreign lecturers and students; as Department members’ participation in conferences and research organized by foreign partners; as publication of books and journals containing articles resulting from all these forms of cooperation; exchange of books, publications, teaching material and information, etc.
Since 1995 the Department is member of the CEEPUS network (Central European Exchange Program for University Studies). In the initial period of its membership in CEEPUS the Department was active as a receiving institution for students from Austria, Macedonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and Slovenia, and for teachers from Bulgaria, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Over the last five years more Croatian students of ethnology go abroad, which represents the realization of the reciprocal role of the CEEPUS network.
As a continuation of CEEPUS mobility, the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology joined the European Union mobility networks (Erasmus Mundus). Many graduate students and lately many postgraduate students as well, are included in mobility to other European universities as part of the Erasmus network. The Department has signed many international Erasmus agreements. Traditionally the most intensive and long lasting agreements are those with the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and University of Szeged, Hungary. The Department has also signed Erasmus agreements with the University in Halle (Germany), Padua (Italy) and Tallinn (Estonia).
The rich international cooperation of the Department is also based on bilateral agreements signed with foreign universities by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the University of Zagreb. Also worth a mention due to its diversity and longevity is the cooperation with the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland (more on the intensive thirty-year long cooperation in Manda Svirac’s article “Međunarodna suradnja s etnolozima Jagelonskog sveučilišta u Krakovu”), University of Bergen, Norway (more in Nevena Škrbić Alempijević’s article “Suradnja Odsjeka za etnologiju i kulturnu antropologiju Filozofskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Zagrebu s Odsjekom za kulturalne studije i povijest umjetnosti Filozofskog fakulteta Sveučilišta u Bergenu, Norveška”) and the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Part of the international cooperation takes place within the Postgraduate program of the Department. Guest lecturers from Bergen (Norway), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Malmö (Sweden) and Edinburgh (Great Britain) have held lectures, as well as independent courses as part of postgraduate studies.
