“Literary translation and translation technologies: an impossible combination?”*

Abstract:

Literary translation and translation technologies seems to be an impossible combination. Translation technologies have been initially designed to speed up the translation process of scientific/technical texts but nowadays it is largely applied to any type of texts because of  the availability of free online services. These technologies are also more and more having a major role in the translators training curriculum and in the professional world but mainly in the field of technical translation. Due to their characteristics and their limitations, Translation Technologies have never been considered so far in assisting literary translation, but this standpoint may change in the near future thanks to the availability of large corpora of literary texts and the recent research advances in this field. In this contribution I will explore the state of the art of the interaction between literary translation and translation technologies.

Johanna Monti is Associate Professor at “L’Orientale” University of Naples, Italy, where she teaches Translation Studies, Computational Linguistics, and Machine-Translation (MT) and Computer-Aided Translation (CAT). She has acted as a member of the scientific committees of various renowned international conferences on Natural Language Processing, and as external evaluator for the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) and the Horizon 2020 program. Her main research interests are the impact of Translation Technologies (MT and CAT tools) on the translation process , development of linguistic resources (dictionaries, grammars, ontologies) for Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications, Multiword Unit processing and Translation, crowdsourcing and gamification in the development of NLP applications.
